About Harvest Home Farmers’ Market
Harvest Home Farmers’ Market is an NYC non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to local, farm-fresh produce to low-income neighborhoods. Founded in 1993, the markets create a community gathering place that educates the public about health and nutrition, supports regional agriculture and provides job opportunities six days a week during the summer season. Harvest Home Farmers’ Markets currently operates markets in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens and accepts Food Stamp/EBT cards, Women Infant and Children Farmer’s Market Nutrition Coupons (FMNP), Senior Coupons and Health Bucks.
About the Founder
Raised in Camaguey, Cuba and the South Bronx, Maritza Wellington Owens began her career as a Community Organizer with the Community Service Society of New York. Recognizing that access to good quality fruits and vegetables is one of the key factors for sustaining good health she established her first Farmers’ Market in 1993 through the Healthy Start Program. Over the years she continued to develop markets in communities like East Harlem that accounts for the highest proportion of obese adults among all NYC neighborhoods. Maritza lives in NYC with her daughters Kemari and Krizta.
